Will a Chair Cushion Restuff Work?

A cushion restuff with brand new high-density foam wrapped in fresh Dacron can usually do the trick when it comes to breathing new life into your furniture. Your couch cushion or chair cushion seat always bares the most burden because it directly comes into contact with the weight being applied. Over time, the integrity of the foam will begin to deteriorate and lose its form. The elasticity will break down and the cushion will no longer “puff back up” as well once you get off, leaving “dents” in the fabric where it is loose over the cushion. When your couch cushion or chair cushion looks like that, you know it’s time to replace the insides.

However, there is more to a piece of furniture than just the cushion. Have you ever looked inside or underneath? Most furniture begins as a frame made of wood. If your furniture is older, then it is more likely manufactured out of hardwood and has higher durability. You’re less likely to experience any issues with proper care. Furniture manufacturing today is not what it used to be; it has become more streamlined with quality being sacrificed for quantity. Cheaper plywood replaces hardwood and wood nails replaced by staples and glue. This means, while the furniture is less expensive to purchase, it is also more likely to begin breaking down on you sooner than you’d expect it to. If your frame is in anyway damaged and affecting its comfortability, then you might consider replacing the furniture rather than a cushion restuff.

If not the frame or cushion, then what could be bugging you is the jute webbing underneath the seat, that’s the part that holds the cushion up in an otherwise hollow space in the furniture. Over time this too can deteriorate and break down or the staples holding in place can pull out, loosening the tension and allowing the cushion to sink in. This will also require an upholsterer to fix and a restuff will not provide total relief. Additionally, some pieces of furniture have springs built in that can also break down and greatly affect the way you sit on the furniture. Again, this requires the work of an upholsterer to replace the springs.
